Competition

Adapting to
Complex Risks: East Asian Strategies and Perspectives
The CAMPUS Asia, Fudan-Kobe-Korea University Consortium invites you to
enter a Paper Competition with the topic of “Risk Management in East Asia”. The
Paper Competition will run during the 2020 Fall academic year for graduate
students of SIRPA, GSICS, and GSIS. Selected applicants will have the chance
for a short presentation at the Fudan-Kobe-Korea Student Workshop through video
conference on November 13.
The competition will culminate in an award ceremony on December 11th.
Successful applicants will receive an award certificate and some honorarium.
Participants will be expected to submit a working paper (approx. 5,000-6,000
words) with a clear argument by October 16th to be selected for the online
workshop. Those who present at the workshop should submit the finalized paper
by November 20th. Professors from the 3 universities
and other experts will be assigned to review all papers.
1. General Instructions
The competition will focus on the theme of risk management and will cover
these five areas: Disaster & Development,
Security, Finance, Science & Technology, and Education. Some of the
research question topics can include, but not be limited to, the following:
1. Disaster &
Development
What
behavioral responses are most effective – singly and in combination – at
reducing infection?
What disaster responses are most effective – singly and
in combination – for reducing the infection and transmission of COVID-19?
Is technology
being effectively used for disaster management in emerging
countries? Explain your answer with arguments.
How can we limit the ‘scarring’
effects of COVID-19 and its damage to development?
What happens to national NGOs and
civil society after international aid begins declining or is withdrawn?
2. Security
How did international organizations
and governments cope with COVID-19, and how effective was the response?
How might
new technologies such as drones and AI be modified or controlled to lessen any
negative impacts on conflict situations?
How might COVID-19 affect refugee/migration support in developing
countries?
How can
women's empowerment in conflict and post-conflict settings be strengthened?
3. Finance
How
significant is the advance of new economic ideas (e.g. Green New Deal, Doughnut
Economics, Degrowth) as alternative pathways that could avoid disaster
capitalism in the future?
What is the
best way to regulate economics by using finance as a tool?
What are the impacts of COVID-19 on
the world financial system?
Do the risks of the market explain why corporate social
responsibility affects earnings management? Provide arguments to your answer.
4. Science &
Technology
How can new technologies and innovations contribute to combating and
lowering the risks of pandemics such as COVID-19?
How should the government manage risks of emerging technologies, i.e. big
data, artificial intelligence, synthetic biology, etc.?
What can be done to improve governance in the scientific community and
reduce the risks of scientific misconduct from occurring?
How can governments promote technological innovations that contribute to
inclusive development?
5. Education
What behavioral responses are most effective – singly and
in combination – at reducing infection?
How can
education contribute to development?
What are the
impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on education?
How can
decision makers improve education systems in a post-COVID world?
How can East Asian countries contribute to improving education quality in
developing countries?

Working
paper submission: October 16th.

of selected participants for presentation: October 30th.
Presentation
at FKK workshop: November 13th.

must be a current graduate student enrolled at SIRPA, GSICS, and GSIS. (2020 Fall academic year)

Submitting
your application and paper:
You must
apply for the competition before submitting your paper
Please
submit your paper by email to gsiscampusasia@korea.ac.kr.
Send a copy
of your certificate of enrollment upon submission.

title your file “Campus Asia Paper Competition YOUR NAME.doc.”
Length and Format
Word limit:
5,000 – 6,000 (excluding references, tables, and graphics)
The
manuscript should begin with an abstract of no more than 200 words.
Format:
Microsoft Word, Times New Roman, 12-point font, 1.5 line spacing, normal
margins, academic style in-text citations and a reference list.
Plagiarism
Authors
should always cite the sources of their ideas and data. If plagiarism
is detected, papers will be rejected without further review and awards will be
revoked.
3. Awards
Professors from the 3 universities and other experts will be assigned to
review all papers and select nine papers as winners.
- Grand Prize (1 paper): Award Certificate, Cash Prize
equivalent to USD 300, AirPods Pro.
- 1st Prize
(3 papers): Award Certificate and Cash Prize equivalent to USD 200.
- 2nd Prize
(5 papers): Award Certificate and Cash Prize equivalent to USD 100.

2020 캠퍼스 아시아 대학원생 영어 논문 경진대회
복합적 리스크에 대한 적응: 동아시아 전략과 관점
고려대-고베대-후단대가 참가하는 캠퍼스 아시아 컨소시엄에서는 '동아시아에서의 리스크 관리'를 주제로 한 영어 논문 경진대회에 여러분을 초대합니다. 본 대회는 2020년 가을학기에 등록되어 있는 고려대, 고베대 및 후단대 국제대학원생을 대상으로 진행됩니다. 선발된 지원자에게는 11월 13일 온라인으로 개최되는 고려대-고베대-후단대 공동 학생 워크숍에서 본인의 논문을 발표할 기회가 주어집니다.
온라인 공동 학생 워크숍에 선정되기 위해서 지원자들은 10월 16일까지 명확한 논거가 있는 원고 (약 5000~6000단어)를 제출하셔야 합니다. 1차 선발된 지원자는 워크숍에서 본인의 논문을 발표하고, 11월 20일까지 최종 논문을 제출해야 합니다. 3개 대학의 교수를 포함한 전문가들이 최종 논문을 심사할 예정입니다. 본 공모전 시상은 12월 11일로 예정되어 있으며, 합격자에게는 상장, 상금 및 소정의 기념품이 주어집니다.
1. 전반적인 정보
이 공모전은 리스크 관리라는 주제에 초점을 맞추고 다음 5개 분야를 다룹니다. 재난과 개발, 보안, 금융, 과학과 기술, 교육. 연구 질문 주제는 다음과 같은 질문을 할 수 있지만 이에 국한되지는 않습니다.
I. 재난과 개발
COVID-19의 감염과 전염을 줄이기 위해 개별적 혹은 복합적인 효과적인 재해 대응방식은 무엇인가?
신흥 국가에서 재난 관리에 기술이 효과적으로 활용되고 있는가?
COVID-19의 낙인효과와 개발에 대한 그 피해를 어떻게 제한할 수 있을까?
국제 원조가 감소하거나 없어진다면 시민단체와 시민사회에는 어떤 일이 벌어질까?
II. 안보
국제기구 및 정부는 COVID-19에 어떻게 대처하였으며, 그 대처방안은 얼마나 효과적이었는가?
드론, 인공지능 등 새로운 기술들이 갈등 상황에 미치는 부정적 영향을 줄이기 위해 어떻게 개량 또는 통제될 수 있는가?
COVID-19는 개발도상국의 난민/이민지원에 어떤 영향을 미칠 수 있는가?
분쟁 시와 분쟁 후 환경에서의 여성의 권한 강화는 어떻게 강화될 수 있는가?
III. 금융
새로운 경제사상의 발전(예: 그린 뉴딜, 도넛 이코노믹스, 역성장)은 향후 재해 자본주의를 피할 수 있는 대안적 방법으로서 얼마나 중요한가?
금융을 도구로 삼아 경제를 규제하는 최선의 방법은 무엇인가?
COVID-19이 전 세계적으로 금융시스템에 어떤 영향을 주는가?
시장의 리스크가 기업의 사회적 책임이 수익관리에 영향을 미치는 이유를 설명하고 있는가?
IV. 과학과 기술
새로운 기술과 혁신이 COVID-19와 같은 유행병의 위험을 퇴치하고 낮추는 데 어떻게 기여할 수 있는가?
빅데이터, 인공지능, 합성생물학 등 새로운 기술의 리스크를 어떻게 관리해야 하는가?
과학계의 거버넌스를 개선하고 과학적인 비행의 위험이 일어나는 것을 줄이기 위해 무엇을 할 수 있는가?
정부는 어떻게 포괄적 개발에 기여하는 기술 혁신을 촉진할 수 있는가?
V. 교육
교육은 어떻게 발전에 기여할 수 있는가?
COVID-19 전염병이 교육에 미치는 영향은?
COVID 이후의 세계에서 의사결정자들이 어떻게 교육 시스템을 개선할 수 있는가?
동아시아 국가들이 개발도상국의 교육 질 향상에 어떻게 기여할 수 있을까?
