The Henry L. Stimson Center, a nonpartisan policy research center, seeks a highly motivated individual to join the team as a full-time Research Associate or Research Analyst for the 38 North Program.

Stimson's 38 North Program is an authoritative source of information and analysis about the DPRK's internal and external affairs. Given the inherent dangers of conflict on the Korean Peninsula, an informed public debate on issues related to North Korea can reduce the risks of misperception and miscalculation. 38 North's focused efforts help ensure that high-quality research, analysis, and data resources are available to policymakers and practitioners working to solve one of the most complex security dilemmas facing the world today.

The Research Associate/Research Analyst position will require a broad understanding and interest in peace and security on the Korean Peninsula. This position will oversee the production of the 38 North website while contributing to research and program initiatives examining various aspects of North Korea's internal and external affairs, especially the role North Korea's WMD development plays in regional and global security. The position will also assist in identifying and securing funding for new and existing 38 North initiatives.

The successful candidate will have a Master's degree or equivalent and/or a combination of education and professional experience in international security, preferably on Korean or East Asian Affairs or nuclear nonproliferation. Background in web content management, photo editing, GIS, or GEOINT a plus. Technical and language skills should be highlighted in the application.

Essential Functions:

Research

  • Monitor, evaluate, and issue briefings about current news and other research developments in the assigned project area;
  • Manage satellite imagery related projects including scoping, imagery acquisition and processing, markup, and publishing;
  • Develop new data and imagery driven research projects to expand knowledge of critical North Korea and/or Korean Peninsula issues;
  • Write occasional papers, commentaries, reports, articles, and issue briefs to disseminate research findings and express policy options;
  • Evaluate and suggest areas of new research that can advance project goals and objectives and further the Stimson Center's mission; and
  • Network with relevant individuals and institutions fostering the exchange of ideas and building issue consensus; act as a liaison on project committees, media, and other external audiences.

Project Management

  • Manage web publishing process for 38North.org, including photo acquisition and editing, imagery processing and pre-publication markup, content management, and resource development;
  • Manage media outreach and work to expand 38 North's social media presence and following;
  • Plan activities, develop products/deliverables, and set priorities for projects. Communicate these priorities effectively, and manage them efficiently;
  • Develop and implement mechanisms to evaluate project progress and ensure timely and high-quality work product;
  • Identify, develop, and cultivate funding sources and prepare substantive content for funding proposals (required for Research Analysts);
  • Monitor project spending and funding; and
  • Prepare interim and final funding reports.

The above specified tasks may not be the only duties assigned. Employees will be required to carry out any other job-related instructions requested by their supervisor.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Korea Studies, East Asia Studies, International Affairs, or related field with 5-7 years of relevant experience; Master's Degree preferred.
  • Superior research and writing skills; ability to verbally articulate ideas in presentations and interviews;
  • Ability to work independently and to work well collaboratively in a team environment;
  • Demonstrated ability to handle a large number of ongoing activities, to prioritize accordingly, often under deadline;
  • Personal commitment to, knowledge of, and/or, interest in the substantive work of the program;
  • Strong photo editing and web content management skills;
  • Knowledge, training, and/or experience in GIS or GEOINT strongly preferred; and
  • Korean language skills (reading and writing especially) strongly preferred.
