Program Overview

Since 2008, Korea University Graduate School of International Studies has conducted a joint program with Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP), a government-funded research institution in Korea. The program is called Graduate Program for Area Studies (GPAS). The ultimate goal of the program is to foster Korean experts on particular world regions. This program is designed for students who want to study the regions of Southeast Asia and Europe by providing the following services and activities:

  • Lectures on Southeast Asia and Europe
  • Special Lectures of invited regional experts
  • Scholarships
  • Internships opportunities in international organizations such as UN ESCAP, UNESCO, UNDP, UNODC, etc.
  • Field trips and field research
  • Financial support to the East Asian Student Society
  • KEEP (KIEP Emerging Economies Pathfinder) Project (supporting Korean SMEs to enter Southeast Asian markets)

Please note that while all GSIS students can benefit from lectures and special lectures, due to KIEP regulations only Korean nationals are eligible to apply for GPAS funding.

Selection Criteria Application will be opened each semester for GSIS students including Freshmen. Students will be selected based on document screenings (application form, official transcript, English proficiency test score report, and CV) and interviews (passion for regional research, English proficiency, and sincerity).
Selection Procedures The notice of selection will be posted on the GSIS Website during the first week of each semester. After document screenings and interviews, the results will be informed to individuals.
Scholarships
  • KEEP Scholarships: 6 Million KRW/person
  • General Scholarships: 3~6 Million KRW/person
Terms of Payment Students are required to take courses that are associated with Southeast Asia or Europe, and their graduation thesis also needs to be related to the Southeast Asian or European region.

Institution Liaison
  • The purpose is to provide an opportunity for students to get overseas training/ internship. If a student is unable to do so, the institute can liaise them with UN ESCAP, where more than 30 student interns have been sent since 2008 by the institution.
  • For students having difficulties with getting an internship abroad, a short-term regional training with the advising professor could be conducted in Southeast Asia during the winter break.
Support Funds
  • Internship for less than 2 months: 2.5 Million KRW
  • Internship for over 2 months: 750,000 KRW/Month will be given (Maximum 4 Million KRW)

Selection Application will be opened each spring semester for GSIS students. A student team will be selected based on document screenings (applicants' research plan including topic, objective, methodology, overseas research plan) and interviews.

Purpose
  • To enhance research in Southeast Asia and to respond accordingly for the demands coming from the domestic small & medium sized corporations
  • To provide opportunities for students majoring in Southeast Asian Studies to develop skills of regional research and business practice
Management
  • Each team will be managed by one advising professor, three majoring students (KEEP Scholarship Students) and one representative from a selected corporation. They will have two overseas research, monthly advising and project monitoring.
  • The selected companies who are seeking out for entering Southeast Asian market, should work with KIEP to meet the relevant tasks.
  • Each team will perform a market research (survey) and analysis on market entry. If necessary, selected experts (Research Personnel of Korea Small Business Institute, industrial professionals, etc.) can be engaged.
Support Funds - About 14.5 Million KRW for field research - About 1 Million KRW for conference support
